Boy recalls when he was in second grade girls would chase boys around and try to kiss them - he didn't like it except when it was a specific girl - "a secret part of him wanted to get caught". A companion book to A Crack In the Sea. Disfigured girl whose parents aren't very kind to her try to marry her off to her father's advisor who is really planning to kill him. Girl runs away and befriends a dolphin who turns into a girl. They discover a magical cave and live there happily until they have a disagreement- the dolphin girl leaves and the other girl turns into a statue that cries salty tears. Many years later a boy and a girl who are running away find her and bring her back to life. Girl is running from abusive stepfather- some of his abuse is described in detail some is implied- all of it bad. Girl eventually comes ot trust that boy won't hurt her. Boy is sad because his mother died and his adopted mother abandoned the family- father is distant. WHen boy is injured girl holds him and protects him with her body from further injury, helps him walk, applies salve to the wounds on his back etc. In the end they hold hands - implied they are more then friends but not stated outright.

A family escaping Vietnam is attacked by pirates and their rickety rowboat sinks- they magically escape into the same world. A boy who can talk to fish is kidnapped to help a king find the door to the other world. Black and white illustration of boy and girl twins found walking on the ocean fully undressed - but only shows half of their backs. Slave girl realizes that she is the wrong "age and sex to be left alone for long by sailors" so she pretends she is sick- women slaves have more freedom of movement than men so there is "more liberty for sailors to take them off on their own, if they desired. Girl sleeps with a knife under her pillow in case a man "bothers her". Girl kisses the top of boys head as if "they were even more than friends". Sea monster couple call each other "sweetheart".

This book is a sequel to "The Doll Shop Downstairs". A Jewish family welcomes a poor cousin from Russia who is sent over to America to live with them when her mother takes a job cleaning a house with no room for her daughter to stay. The girls adopt a stray cat with an injured baby, first against their father's wishes, but at the end with his permission. Girls rationalize their behavior since their parents encourage them to give tzedakkah as often as they can and taking care of the cat is find. Guest comes for Rosh Hashana dinner and gives them a bouquet of flowers which girl puts in a vase (holiday has presumably started already) At dinner, they sing Yiddish ballads at table (coed singing). 13 year old girl "decides" she will fast the whole Yom Kippur. GIrl notices xmas trees on the street. Family needs to prepare a lot of dolls to sell for the xmas holiday season.

An orphaned girl who works for a cruel chimney sweep master comes to love a monster created from chimney soot. SHe calls the monster a "golem" and refers to the Maharal of Prague and his golem "golem: fabled monster in the JEwish tradition, a homunculus crafted from mud or clay and animated though Kabbalistic ritual... ref Psalm 139:16"- use "a sort of magic word called shem". VIvid descriptions of poverty and mistreatment of young children. A child is beaten by a pack of boys calling him a Jew. A Jewish teacher befriends the orphaned girl- explains that her family was religious but she distanced herself from them and from Jewish practice- when asked if she is Jewish she says "I am...or I was, once". She shows the girl a siddur but explains she can't read because girls were "scarecly taught to read at all. GIrls were expected to keep the home unitl they could marry and keep another's home"- tells how she was "stifled" by her family. Tells the story of Passover and how much she despises the story since the innnocent first born children were killled. Later on girl asks non observant Jewish teacher is meeting golem makes her believe in G-d, she replies "it makes me believe that the world is full of wonders that I can scarcely imagine. Perhaps that is the same thing". Chapter about xmas- includes story of Yoshka.

When one sister runs off to find her prince and ends up being kidnapped, the other sister sets off to rescue her with amusing results. Girl imagines that kidnapper will kiss her - her "first kiss" and he will transform into a prince.- just like in Beauty and the Beast which is summarized in the book.
