Boy is adopted and asks teacher how he can make a family tree- his teacher tells him that he should write his adoptive parents since "they love you and take care of you".
06/14/2024 Bad Dad Walliams, David 6 - 8 Not Acceptable
The story is about a boy named Frank whose father is a race car driver and loses his job and his prestige after an accident. While attempting to pay the bills without any job, the father borrows money from a mobster, who blackmails him into helping him perform criminal acts. Unfortunately, the author uses vulgarities and puts characters into inappropriate situations. But the nail in the coffin is a lesbian relationship and wedding depicted in the book. Just no.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
The mother leaves to become the girlfriend of the mobster. Of course the lesbian relationship between the boy's aunt and the female pastor (!) and their wedding is not acceptable.
Language
Vulgar language, inappropriate situations.
06/14/2024 World in Between Trebincevic, Kenan and Shapiro, Susan 6 - 8 Problematic
Based on a true story during the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, the book depicts a Muslim family fleeing the oncoming army seeking to destroy them. As this is basically autobiographical, the author describes the tribulations his family faced, the real danger, and most heartbreaking, the rejection and hate they experienced from (former) friends, neighbors and significant people in their lives (sound familiar?). Unfortunately, the book is laced with outright cursing, the main character's concern for a girl in his class and some others who he meets, as well as references to attacks on female relatives by the soldiers.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
The main character has a girl in his class who he feels connected to. He also meets other girls that he feels emotional about and he mentions his older brother having girls friends and relationships.
Language
Specific curse words are used (usually by the father). Not saying they're not warranted, but the parents must judge if they want to expose their children to this language.
Violence
Of course scenes of war include violence but I particularly object to the references to attacks on the women by the soldiers.
06/14/2024 The Midnight Gang David Walliams 5 - 8 Not Acceptable
Although this books is a New York Times bestseller, and, admittedly, well-written, there are too many red flags to allow me to recommend it. While the premise of the story is sweet - a hospital porter who attempts to make the dreams of the youngest patients come true - the inappropriate language and imagery and the inclusion of a hint of LGBQT - takes it off the list.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
There seems to be a budding friendship between the main character and one of the other patients, but the author creates a situation where one of the girls kisses another girl (as in bride and groom). Just too sticky.
Language
There are many inappropriate words, actions and even illustrations in the book. While the actual language may deemed mild, there is too much "bathroom humor" as well as an incident when an elderly woman flies over the city with balloons and loses her nightdress (don't ask!).
04/07/2024 The Superteacher Project Korman, Gordon 5 - 8 Questionable
The seventh grade at Brightling Middle School is being taught by a teacher who is amazingly briliant, sharp and incredible at anything he tries - as perfect as is humanly possible, only - he isn't. He is an AI robot, part of a project being tried out by the government, as his students soon learn. When the robot/teacher begins to develop relationships with his students that veer off the program, the government is ready to dismantle him and the project. The kids come up with a plan to save their beloved teacher from destruction. An excellent, enjoyable book . . . except . . . a newly-divorced mother of one of the students thinks the teacher is wonderful and starts to date him.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
As mentioned, one of the mothers, who is also the head of the PTA, starts to develop a relationship with the robot-teacher. At a field hockey game, she hugs him and later they go out on a date. Although nothing more happens, and of course the entire scenario adds nothing to the plot, a parent would have to be comfortable with their child reading about this.
04/07/2024 Unhooked Maxwell, Lisa 6 - 9 Not Acceptable
Too much violence, explicit physical male/female contact and dysfunctional families. NOT recommended at all!
04/07/2024 Elfie Unperfect Mahoney, Kristin 4 - 6 Acceptable
A very sweet book about Elfie, a super-smart girl who, unfortunately, has trouble making friends. The book describes her attempt to fit in to a new, high-tech middle school, which ends on the first day. She returns to her old school and finally begins to find friendship and acceptance.
03/03/2024 Return of the Dragon Slayers Mull, Brandon Dragonwatch 5 - 7 Problematic
Final book in the series. The good guys finally win. Lots of gory good guy vs. bad guy violence. Man has his arm around his girlfriend. Various esoteric discussions about what happens after you die- mostly conclude that there is something better- no mention of G-d. Ten year old boy asks teenage girl if she wants to be his girlfriend. Hispanic boy learned English by watching movies and listening to songs. Teenage girl gives boy she just met a kiss on each cheek. Teenage boy/unicorn gives teenage girl he likes an "embrace, tilting back until she stood on her tiptoes" One sentence mention of father xmas said in jest. Teenage boy comes to tell his teenage girlfriend that he is no longer a unicorn- he takes her hand "his touch sent a thrill through her... His lips brushed hers..."

03/02/2024 Champion of the Titan Games Mull, Brandon Dragonwatch 5 - 7 Problematic
The saga continues as the war with the dragons intensifies. , Man tells teenager that a boy she likes "has it bad for you". Giant Queen "mocks romantic attention. Pats her suitors on the head and suggests they get on a stool if they want a kiss." Ask if someone wooing her is a "spurned lover".. 02/19/2024 The Star Dunes Trueit, Trudy Explorer Academy 6 - 8 Questionable
Folowing the series' theme, Cruz had been searching for an ancient temple in Turkey with his classmates, when he was pushed into a cave, probably a member of Nebula, he suspects. The cave leads him to discover an ancient archeological treasure and he is rescued. When he returns to the home ship, Orion, he receives another video message from his mother in the form of a cryptic puzzle before going on his next mission of saving apes from a human virus that is spreading in the species. This time a different member of the group is poisoned, Bryndis, but Cruz realizes that it was really meant for him. When Cruz finally figues out the clue, he takes, without permission, one f the autocars to find the next piece of the cipher. Once again, he is dogged by Nebula agents, but escapes in time. On the next assignment, Cruz and his friends distract hunters who are aiming at pangolins, an endangered species. At the end, Cruz hears the good news that Bryndis is recovering and he and Fanchon, a lab genius, discover another message from his mother.
Divorce/Dysfunctional Families
Dugan reveals that he and his brother are "shuffled to relatives a lot" because his "parents have problems." He also mentions that his brother is being bullied.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
The problem is that Cruz has lots of friends - including girlfriends. Lani is his best friend, and Bryndis is someone he is clearly emotionally attached to, which is commented on when he charged into the forest to save her. On page 70 there is an emotional encounter between the two of them, ending with Bryndis kissing Cruz on the cheek.
Violence
Cruz is pushed into a cave and left there by a Nebula agent, Bryndis is poisoned, and then Cruz and Dugan are pursued by Nebula agents, first having their car smashed on the road and then being chased on the sand dunes - might be frightening for younger readers.
02/19/2024 The Law of Finders Keepers Turnage, Sheila 5 - 8 Problematic
There's a treasure hiding in Tupelo's Landing and the Desperado Detectives, headed by Mo LoBeau and her friends, Dale and Harm, are up against a professional treasure hunter and have to use all their smarts to get to the treasure first. Mo is also searching for another treasure, - information about her mother, since she was found as a baby drifting in the water after a deadly flood. Following both of these storylines and Mo's sharp wit is intriguing.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
The problem is that Mo's comrades in arms are both boys. Dale is itching to kiss one of the girls in school, every other student seems intent on attracting someone, and Mo herself is very attached to Dale's brother, Lavender, saying outright that she wants to marry him. Mo even tries to cook up a romance between her teacher and the town's policeman. Just a bit much for one book . . .
Violence
Someone tries to scare Mo off by leaving bloody handprints on the window and there is a scary scene when Tinks, the town mechanic, is nearly killed trying to get to the treasure. There is also a robbery at one of the homes of the characters.
02/19/2024 Dragons Vs. Robots Mancusi, Mari Dragon Ops 5 - 8 Questionable
The book opens with Ian having flashbacks of the dragon attacking him which is interfering with his regular activities. He then overhears his uncle saying that Hiro, the owner of the video game Ian had played, is missing, and Ian and Lilli return to the virtual reality world to discover that the main dragon, Atreus, is acting on his own, and that Ikumi has been kidnapped. This time they enter Mech Ops with Starr and Josh, the owner's grandson. It's a world populated by robots and zombies as well, who they have to dodge or destroy to save Ikumi - and themselves.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
In this book, Lilli and Josh, we discover, have been having a meaningful relationship (not physical, but emotional) and Ian is still very much taken with Ikumi.
Religion/Hashkafa
There are many betrayals and confusing relationships, which tie up neatly in the end, but can confuse and upset a younger reader.
Language
Some mild bad language is used - no cursing.
Violence
Similar to the first book, there is a lot of slash and kill type of violence, as there are in typical video games.
02/19/2024 Dragon Ops Mancusi, Mari Dragon Ops 5 - 8 Questionable
The premise of the book is that a gaming company has created a virtual reality park where players can actually feel they are "in" the game. Ian, his sister, Lilli, and cousin, Derek, are taken by Derek's father to try it out before it opens to the public. Once inside, though, they discover that they can't find their way out; they have to figure out how to escape the game using all their smarts. But Derek is kidnapped by a rogue AI dragon, and now things seem more real - and dangerous. As they progress through the game, they meet Yano, a dragon who is their guide, and Ikumi, who is stuck in the game as well. They are given a quest to find four stones which involves much fighting off creatures, to free Derek and eventually, destroying the main dragon himself, In the process, Ikumi "dies"; her father, Hiro, appears, explaining that a disgruntled programmer was responsible for all their difficulties and the gamers are transported back to reality (much to their relief). Ian and Lilli go back to gaming the "old" way - until Ian sees a message on his screen inviting him to play again . . .
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
In the course of the book we discover the Lilli had a deep relationship (although nothing physical is mentioned) with an on-line boyfriend - who turned out to be a made-up person by 2 girlfriends of hers, which was humiliating and embarrassing (highlighting the danger of social media). Lilli also sees that Ian has become enamored with Ikumi, who eventually betrays him but then redeems herself by defeating the main dragon.
Violence
As in today's video games, the violence is constant - constantly destroying creatures, real or mythical. There's definitely violence and gore here - but everyone "knows" it's not real, but it's certainly desensitizes those who consistently play these games to violence in general.
02/19/2024 Project F Duprau, Jeanne 4 - 6 Acceptable
The book depicts a post-apocalyptic world which no longer relies on fossil fuels. Thirteen year old Keith travels to another city to pick up his cousin, Lulu, whose parents died in a sudden accident. While he is on the train he discovers that his seatmate took Keith's bag by mistake. On the way home, Keith gets off with Lulu to return the bag, only to discover that the man and many others are working on "Project F" (for freedom), which will introduce the ability for people to fly individually, using fossil fuel powered rockets. Keith is offered to "fly" and is exhilirated by the experience. /soe time later he receives a message asking him if he is willing to demonstrate his flying ability in a public gathering where the rockets will be sold. Keith realizes that he is going against the society's ban on fossil fuels although he greatly enjoys flying. In the end, he does the demonstration but the head of Project F, Malcolm, wants to fly, too and tries to outfly Keith. Malcolm forgets his fuel is limited and tumbles to the ground, barely alive. When the authorities visit Keith after the event, Keith reveals the entire plan of Project F, knowing it's the right thing to do, and so the entire group involved in the project is disbanded.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
This book is very "clean"; Keith does notice how beautiful Amity is but their only interaction is at the end of the book when they discover a sunken car in a pond nearby.
02/12/2024 Wrath of the Dragon King Mull, Brandon Dragonwatch 5 - 7 Problematic

01/05/2024 The Forbidden Island Trueit, Trudy Explorer Academy 6 - 8 Generally Acceptable
Cruz and his fellow explorers at the Academy go on hi-tech scientific missions all over the globe. Cruz's mother, who was involved in critical scientific research, is thought to have been killed in a blast in her lab by an evil businessman who goes by the code name Nebula and has agents everywhere. Cruz's mother left a holographic journal with clues for pieces of a cipher Cruz needs to gather together. In this book, Cruz is trying to find the last piece, but Nebula's agents are dogging his footsteps and trying to kill him as well.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
Cruz's aunt is a professor at the Academy and seems to have a relationship with another professor, who she kisses (pg. 89). Cruz is also enamored with one of the other students, Bryndis, who kisses him (pg. 142) and there are a few references to his feelings about her in other chapters. There is also Cruz's somewhat platonic relationship with a different girl, Lani, which seems to get deeper as the book progresses.
01/05/2024 The Chaos King Ruby Laura 5 - 8 Questionable
The sequel to The Wall and the Wing, Gurl, now Georgie, is getting acclimated to living her life as the Richest Girl in the World. Her classmates, though, have taken a real dislike of her. Bug, also, has become a celebrity, affecting their friendship. But strange things are happening in the city; inanmate objects from the museum are coming to life suddenly and Georgie and Bug are now facing a self-proclaimed Chaos King who wants to control the world.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
The boy/girl relationships feature more prominentl in this book. The girls in Georgie's class want to date Bug; when one of them succeeds to get his attention, she kisses him in public. There are also the feelings that Georgie and Bug express more openly for each other.
01/05/2024 The Wall and The Wing Ruby, Laura 5 - 8 Generally Acceptable
The story is set at a time when people have learned to fly - or at least some of them. Gurl, a resident of an orphanage who does not know anything of her past, is considered a "leadfoot." She discovers accidentally, though, that she does possess the ability to disappear at will, which the head of the orphanage uses to her advantage, forcing Gurl to steal in exchange for Gurl having the privilege to spend time with a cat that she found. When a new boy joins the orphanage, Bug, who is particularly talented in opening locks, Gurl finds an ally to help her discover her past, as well as Bug's.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
There's a reference to a wife running off with a plumber and there's definitely a lot of hand-holding between the two main characters which is at first a necessity (so they can share Gurl's invisibility, for example), and gradually segues to something more meaningful and emotional. The final vision is of Gurl and Bug dancing together in the air.
Language
There is definitely some bathroom language here, some name calling but no cursing or swearing.
01/03/2024 Unplugged Korman, Gordon 5 - 8 Generally Acceptable
Jett Baranov is the son of a famous billionaire who finds himself dropped off in Oasis, a health resort in the middle of the Arkansas wilderness after one of his "practical jokes" go too far. Aside from a focus on healthy food and exercise, all the residents are not allowed to have any technology. Jett can't wait to break all the rules and get out until he bonds with some of the other kids over a baby lizard they find and turn into a pet. But Jett also begins to notice some strange things around Oasis and doesn't stop investigating until he gets to the bottom of the mystery.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
One of the boys at the resort has a sister who is corresponding by mail to her boyfriend (since phones are not allowed). There is also a developing friendship between Jett and one of the girls.
Language
There are some mild vulgarities used here and there - no explicit cursing at all.
01/02/2024 Slacker Korman, Gordon 5 - 8 Generally Acceptable
Cameron Boxer is a "slacker" who works on it - he does everything possible to avoid work and focus on his video gaming, until the day he ignores his mother's instructions and almost burns his home down. His parents insist that he actually do something with his time and he and his friends come up with a fictional school club, the P. A. G., which they post on the school website, just to satisfy Cameron's parents. Unfortunately for Cameron, somehow some kids and the school guidance counselor get wind of the club and now Cameron is pushed into doing some good deeds, such as saving a beaver. The challenge is that the high school crowd is competing for the do-good opportunities and start trying to sabotage the P. A. G., which forces Cameron to really use his brains and resourcefulness to succeed.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
An almost non-issue is that Cameron's younger sister has a friend who wants a "date" with Cameron and sends him a note, which he disregards. More problematic might be the two high school kids who are most intent on destroying the P. A. G. - a girlfriend and boyfriend duo. While nothing explicit is mentioned, there is a clear connection between the two of them; he puts his arm around her shoulder consolingly, she wears lipsticks to match the color of his car, etc.
Language
There is some mild bathroom language (as well as scenes happening in the bathroom) but no actual curse words.
01/01/2024 Mixed Up Korman, Gordon 5 - 8 Generally Acceptable
Reef and Theo are two boys who live in opposite ends of a neighborhood yet seem to share a strange phenomenon: they remember each other's memories. While this is difficult for Theo, for Reef it is exceptionally hard because his mother died suddenly and he is losing all his memories of her. Theo makes the effort to find Reef and together they try to resolve the problem. The book is well-written and emphasizes the values of friendship and loyalty.
Boy/girl relationship, Tznius and Negiah
While the book is almost whistle clean regarding foul language, there is a female character who Theo is attracted to ("has a crush on her") and which Reef also had a connection to (although he no longer really remembers why). There is also one scene where one of the daughter's of Reef's adoptive family has a boyfriend over at the office. There is nothing explicit or physical depicted about these relationships.

2 boys and 2 girls search for items that were parts of Copernicus' time machine, and run away from the bad guys. Put themselves in dangerous situations, sometimes with encouragements of adults. Books do not stand alone, a reader will want to read them all. Very mild references to boy's admiration of girl, not developed in this book, appears to be more as a friend than romantic; mentions of them being in close physical proximity or brief touching, no romance. Boy's parents are divorced, mention that he wished they would get together again, but now he is happy in his new blended family. Mention of girl wearing shorts and 'stylishly slashed t-shirt'. Man hugs woman who saved them - not romantic. Language: screwy. Passing mention of temples for Greek gods. Evil woman kisses precious artifact; her male employee briefly wishes he was the artifact.
